J.A.G Chief Instructor - Shihan Paul

Paul was born in 1968 in Carlton Victoria.  When he was 4 his family moved to Sydney, where he had a rough upbringing on the streets of western Sydney. In 1988 Paul met his wife Aileen.  In 1989 Paul decided to better his life and enter the life of martial arts and joined a local club called Goshin Kan, which was run by chief instructor, Sensei Deena Naidu. In this club Paul would eventually go on to double grade to orange belt, but due to life circumstances he left Goshin Kan for a few years due to his ever expanding family.  In 1995 Paul & a mate decide to join back up to this karate, & went full throttle into training with their Sensei.  Paul put himself back to white belt to start afresh with his mate.

After 5 years Paul received his black belt off his now Kancho Deena Naidu.

Paul continued to train with Deena and also a fellow instructor named Phil Chapman, who ran a Dojo for the same club Goshin Kan, at St Clair in Sydney’s west. Paul also decided to open his own Dojo at the school near his home where his kids attended in Dharruk, Sydney.

Around 2001/2002 he receives his 1st Dan off Kancho Deena Naidu.

End of 2003, Paul closes the doors of his Sydney Dojo for a much bigger future interstate.

2004, Paul and Aileen move their children 900km away to the Gold Coast QLD. For a short while Paul and his daughter Jade try to find a karate that is closest to what they know from Sydney and try many different styles but are unsuccessful. 2005 Sensei Phil Chapman issues Paul with his 2nd Dan.

It’s at this point he decides to start a new Dojo. He starts this in 2007 at the Gilston Town Hall. He starts the new one under the karate he is with at the time called Japanese Karate Federation or JKF. They were an ok club but didn’t really have anywhere close to the Gold Coast for Paul to get his own training.  So an instructor from there recommended International Goju Karate with instructor Shihan Alex Alt, who ran a Dojo at Mudgeeraba State School and lived in Nerang, so was very local. This suited Paul as it was close and he could still have his training. 2009 saw the affiliation of Pauls club at Gilston with IGK under then Shihan Alex Alt and founding Instructor Hanchi Tino Cebrano.

Paul was graded to 3rd Dan Black in 2011.

2012.  Paul decides that as much as he has enjoyed being with IGK for the past 4 years that it is now time to venture and do his own thing with his own club.  So we change our club name to Japanese Australian Goju Karate or J.A.G. Karate. All our current students will stay with us & it just means we will do all gradings & certificates on our own. Still rocognised under Japanese Goju system though.

2013 – Sensei Paul affiliates back with his original club in Sydney Goshin Kan under Kancho Deena Naidu.  We keep our name of Jag Karate.

At present Paul has 2 Dojo’s one that still runs from the Gilston Town Hall and his newest Dojo now opened at Park Lake State School. His Gilston Dojo has 25 + registered members most of which are working hard to get up their training and work up the ranks that is the

grading system. Park Lake has had a good start since 2013 with new  members signing up all the time.  This club now has over 25 registered members as well.

Since 1988 Paul has welcomed 10 children into the world, 4 girls and 6 boys.

He currently lives in Pacific Pines with his wife & 8 children.  He has a full time job working for the Government at Park Lake State School. The kids at the school call him the he Karate Cleaner.

15th  April 2016, Paul is graded to 4th Dan by Kancho Deena Naidu.  His title now changes from Sensei to Shihan

Paul’s title is Shihan  Paul. Shihan means Master.  Paul loves to  teach his beloved karate, he adores his students and classes them as his extended family.  He loves to be able to pass on his knowledge to his students.
